Travelers of the Cross World Inn
Jorvik is a tiny village of about 50 people on the western coast of the Kingdom of Arkoia. It is highly dependent on the land and sea to survive. There are two druids who live in the town who help as much as they can in keeping the town connected and supported by the land.
The town smells really bad. At some point in the past the townspeople dug holes under their homes for their refuse. As the holes filled up and started to overflow they decided it was easier to raise the buildings up rather than build new ones. They now keep the refuse contained with wicker walls under each building. The buildings are all on 6 foot tall stilts. The space under the buildings is full of waste. In the summer the waste is writhing in a carpet of maggots and flies. And the smell is revolting to newcomers but townsfolk don’t seem to notice it. In the winter the decomposing piles of filth help to keep the homes warm.
The filth of the compost is contrasted with the otherwise idyllic scenery of the village. It has groves of trees on three sides, with a small stream. There are numerous wonderful gardens and a small flock of sheep.
The town doesn’t run on a money economy, instead people contribute to the general town food stores and take from the food stores as they need. In the rare case when someone does steal from the town they are taken out a full day’s walk from town. At that point the men who came with beat the thief and leave him/her and when he/she gets back all is forgiven.
